Family Concert: Music From the Movies

Today's Concert

What would your favourite film be like without music? Would the action still feel exciting, the characters still feel brave, or the magic truly take off? Music from the Movies is a fun, family-friendly concert that reveals just how important music is to the stories we see on screen.

You’ll hear thrilling music from Pirates of the Caribbean, How to Train Your Dragon and The Polar Express, all performed by the London Symphony Orchestra – the very Orchestra whose playing has helped bring Harry Potter, Star Wars and countless other films to life.

But this isn’t just a concert – it’s a behind-the-scenes musical adventure! We’ll discover how film scores are written, what it’s like when the LSO records a soundtrack in the studio and we’ll even get to sing with the Orchestra and the London Youth Choirs.

About the Artists

Tim Redmond

conductor and presenter

Tim Redmond is a regular guest conductor with orchestras and opera companies all around the world, but what he loves doing more than anything else is creating concerts for young audiences. He has written and presented dozens of shows for the LSO, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, BBC Symphony and City of Birmingham Symphony in the UK, and for orchestras in the US and Sweden.

He is co-creator of the Royal Albert Hall’s My Great Orchestral Adventure concert series and this year recorded his musical settings of Lynley Dodd’s classic Hairy Maclary children’s stories with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra for CBeebies.

Hannah Andrusier

co-presenter

Hannah Andrusier is an opera singer and actor. She has just performed the title role in The Cunning Little Vixen, is currently singing at Grange Park Opera and in the autumn premieres the first ever opera written in the Manx language. She works regularly with the Hallé, City of Birmingham Symphony and at the Royal Albert Hall, and has recorded several children’s projects for the BBC. Hannah studied at Oxford University and at the Royal Northern College of Music under Elizabeth Ritchie.

Rachel Staunton

chorus master

Rachel Staunton is a London-based conductor, choral entrepreneur and Artistic Director of London Youth Choirs (LYC), which she co-founded in 2012. She is passionate about using singing to unlock young people’s potential, widening access to music for all and creating outstanding choral experiences that resonate both on stage and beyond.

Under her artistic leadership, LYC has delivered transformative musical opportunities for thousands of young people and built a reputation for excellence – performing for royalty, international music legends and at high-profile cultural and corporate events. Rachel also spearheads LYC Voices, the organisation’s professional and commercial arm, which collaborates with brands, media and the film industry to bring bespoke choral performances and recordings to national and international audiences.

Shivani Rattan

chorus master

Shivani Rattan is an engaging choral conductor, mezzo-soprano and workshop leader based in London. She is Conductor of LYC Junior Girls as well as a section Leader for London Youth Choir. She performs with the acclaimed all-female vocal quintet Papagena and is a sought-after session singer. Career highlights include conducting recordings for The Oxford Book of Choral Music by Black Composers (OUP) with London Voices, filming with BBC Bitesize for Get Singing and performing backing vocals for Ellie Goulding on BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge.

Since 2020, Shivani has served as choral co-ordinator for Brent Music Service, while also collaborating with a wide range of national organisations. Her roles include Assistant Conductor for The National Children’s Choir of Great Britain, working in SEND schools with Music of Life and Conducting Tutor with Sing for Pleasure. Shivani is a former National Youth Choir Fellow and now enjoys working with the organisation as a section coach.

London Youth Choirs

London Youth Choirs (LYC) is dedicated to raising voices and shaping lives. Through its citywide community of choirs and free school programmes, LYC brings young people together to find their voice, develop their musical skills and experience the joy, connection and opportunities that singing can bring.

LYC’s singers take on the challenge of a rich classical repertoire as well as exploring diverse contemporary styles. The approach is intentionally inclusive, with a particular commitment to improving access for disadvantaged young people, supporting them in finding their unique voice and enabling them to thrive through music, ultimately changing who appears on the concert stage.

Since 2012, 15,000 young singers have sung with LYC in its ten choirs, schools and community projects. With the help of its supporters, LYC has subsidised every place and provided free or partially free places, ensuring equitable access to all. LYC has provided help with forms, free concert tickets for families, concert uniforms and travel passes.

In March 2026, LYC and LSO Discovery announced a landmark partnership, aimed at enhancing music education and engagement for young people across the capital and beyond. This strategic collaboration – which will be jointly funded by both organisations – brings together LYC’s gold-standard expertise in choral excellence and youth engagement with LSO Discovery’s world-leading strengths in orchestral education and community outreach. Together, the organisations aim to address the ongoing decline in music education by supporting the next generation of musicians, educators and cultural leaders.

London Symphony Orchestra

The London Symphony Orchestra believes that extraordinary music should be available to everyone, everywhere – from orchestral fans in the concert hall to first-time listeners all over the world.

The LSO was established in 1904 as one of the first orchestras shaped by its musicians. Since then, generations of remarkable talents have built the LSO’s reputation for quality, ambition and a commitment to sharing the joy of music with everyone. The LSO performs some 70 concerts every year as Resident Orchestra at the Barbican, with its family of artists: Chief Conductor Sir Antonio Pappano, Conductor Emeritus Sir Simon Rattle, Principal Guest Conductor Gianandrea Noseda, and Associate Artists Barbara Hannigan and André J Thomas. The LSO has major artistic residencies in Paris, Tokyo and at the Aix-en-Provence Festival, and tours regularly across the US and Asia.

Through LSO Discovery, the LSO’s learning and community programme, 60,000 people each year experience the transformative power of music. The Orchestra’s musicians are at the heart of this unique programme, leading workshops, mentoring bright young talent, and visiting schools, hospitals and community spaces. The home of much of this work is LSO St Luke’s, the LSO’s venue on Old Street. In 2025, following a programme of works, the LSO opened up the venue’s facilities to more people than ever before, with new state-of-the-art recording facilities and dedicated spaces for LSO Discovery.

The LSO’s record label LSO Live is a leader among orchestra-owned labels. LSO Live brings to life the excitement of a live performance in a catalogue of over 200 acclaimed recordings, and reaches millions through streaming services and online broadcasts. As a leading orchestra for film, the LSO has entertained millions with its recordings of classic scores, from epic film scores like Star Wars to an appearance in the Oscar-nominated film Maestro.

Through inspiring music, learning programmes and digital innovations, the LSO’s reach extends far beyond the concert hall. And thanks to the generous support of The City of London Corporation, Arts Council England, corporate supporters, trusts and foundations, and individual donors, the LSO is able to continue sharing extraordinary music with as many people as possible, across London and the world.

LSO Family Concerts are a fun, informative way for families to experience live music together and learn more about the instruments of the orchestra.
