Jaco Pastorius (1951 to 1987)

Forgotten Love

✒️ 1976 | ⏰2 minutes

Jaco Pastorius was an American jazz bassist noted for his unusual harmonic contributions to the world of jazz. A member of the jazz fusion act Weather Report, he collaborated with many well-known artists within and without the genre including Herbie Hancock and Joni Mitchell. In his lifetime, Pastorius was renowned for his innovation and enjoyed commercial success in the 1970s, even signing a contract with Warner Bros. During his short life he experienced mental health and addiction issues, and he died aged only 35, following an altercation at a nightclub. The final track from Pastorius’ 1976 self-titled debut album, Forgotten Love takes us on a lyrical and surprising musical journey which, much like Pastorius’ own life, ends on a mysterious and unfinished note.

Avicii (1989 to 2018)

Hey Brother

✒️ 2013 | ⏰4 minutes

The composer of our next piece, Tim Bergling – better known as Avicii – is another musician who died young. A Swedish DJ and music producer, Avicii released two studio albums to critical acclaim, making the top 10 of many countries including the UK and worked with other successful artists such as Coldplay and members of ABBA. Hey Brother is taken from his debut album, True, released in 2013. The song has country and folk-inspired elements, with bluegrass singer Dan Tyminski providing vocals in the original version. In this rendition, Jani Pensola and his Tango Alakulo Ensemble reinterpret the song for a mixed ensemble including violin, ukulele and double bass. Together, the players turn Avicii’s song into an Argentinian milonga, a type of dance. If you enjoyed this, you can also find a special lockdown performance of this arrangement on the LSO’s YouTube channel.

Henry Purcell (1659 to 1695)

Fairest Isle from 'King Arthur'

✒️ 1691 | ⏰5 minutes

Continuing our varied programme, Fairest Isle is an aria by the Baroque composer Henry Purcell. The name of Purcell is often associated with early opera, and this song is taken from the 'semi-opera' King Arthur which he composed late in his life, a few years after the success of Dido and Aeneas (1688). In the opera, this aria is sung by the Roman goddess Venus, a character you might not expect to show up in a narrative about medieval legends and battles! With its sparse instrumental setting, the song adopts a kind of lyrical patriotism in its romantic portrayal of medieval Britain. This is encapsulated in the text, written by poet John Dryden, in which Britannia is described as being more beautiful than even the kingdom of Venus herself.

Alisa Zaika (b 2001)

Third movement from 'Chimaeras'

✒️ 2022 | ⏰5 minutes

Chimaeras is a cycle of three pieces for clarinet and piano. This title is both a literal representation and a rather abstract collective of musical imagery. Chimaeras, creatures of a very particular appearance in Greek mythology, have gradually shape-shifted themselves into crucial symbols of Gothic architecture. They are distorted and gruesome and yet embellish beautiful cathedrals such as Notre-Dame de Paris. The biological description of a chimaera is of a single organism that contains two sets of DNA and so merges two different 'individuals' in itself. Another, somewhat sentimental definition that the word has acquired overtime is an 'illusory, intangible dream, or a delusion'.

Finnish traditional

Blue Dream

✒️ 20th century ⏰3 minutes

Blue Dream (or Sininen uni) – which translates literally to 'Blue Sleep' – is a traditional Finnish children’s song that tells the tale of the Sandman. The Sandman (or nukkumatti in Finnish) is a character in European folklore that sprinkles magic sand on childrens’ eyes to inspire good dreams. The lyrics of the song describe the sandman transporting sleepers to a mystical 'blue land of dreams', and the colour blue remains the dominant motif throughout the song. While Blue Dream is understood to be traditional piece, any Finnish speakers will note that this Sandman is kitted out quite conveniently; he not only has a blue belt and a blue book of dreams, but a blue car too …
